Asana Rebel is a yoga-inspired health & wellness app which currently sports over 40 000 downloads a month.
Their point of difference is their focus on good habits and healthy lifestyle integration, rather than on specific tracking or hardcore workouts. Their yoga sessions are also more fitness and science based, rather than yogi & spiritual focused.
We downloaded the app, researched the brand and got stuck into the workouts and will today be providing an in depth review of everything Asana Rebel has to offer so you can decipher whether it’s the right purchase for you.
Let’s dive in.
About Asana Rebel
Asana Rebel is a popular yoga-inspired health & wellness app founded in Berlin with at least 40 000 new users downloading it each month.
They are a startup company who saw the hundreds of successful fitness apps and thought that there was a missing piece when it came to high quality yoga apps.
They also noticed how most of the popular yoga brands at the time were very ‘spiritual’ and ‘yogi style’, rather than having a focus on the fitness and scientific benefits that yoga brings.
With heavy funding going into research and development, they launched the app in 2015 and have grown year on year.
My Experience with the Asana Rebel App
When you first download Asana Rebel, you will be guided through a series of questions about your individual circumstances, goals and health (e.g. gender, DOB, height, fitness level, diet, etc.).
From the get go, we observed how generally health focused Asana Rebel is, rather than being about achieving specific, timely goals or counting one’s calories, sets and reps.
For example, you could choose 3 or more of the following goals:
- Lose weight
- Sleep better
- Tight and toned body
- Exercise more effectively
- Build healthy habits
- More energy every day
As you can see, it’s more about the integration of healthy habits into your lifestyle.
Once you’re all set up, Asana Rebel will populate your custom fitness plan. Each day you will have a list of healthy habits to get done, in the form of a morning, daytime, evening and sleep checklist.
Here’s what my daily checklist looked like:
- Quiz of the day
- Drink a glass of water
- Music for focus
- Music for focus
- Drink a glass of water
- Drink a glass of water
- Plan at least 8 hours of sleep
- Sleep music and meditation
In the explore tab, you can search for different workout sessions, recipes, meditations and more if you are trying to find something a little more specific or want to change it up from what’s been prescribed to you for the day.
You can also filter by the following categories to narrow down your search.
- Music for focus
The activity tab allows you to track your progress over time. The first thing you’ll observe is your streak or ‘active days’, where you can see how many days in a row you’ve engaged with the app.
You’ll also be able to see your calendar and observe your historical engagement and share your success with friends.
Finally, Asana Rebel adds up and lets you see how many minutes of exercise, music, meditation and sleep improvement activities you have done over the last 7, 30 and 90 days as well as all time.
Asana Rebel Recipes
When signing up, you’ll tell Asana Rebel what your dietary preferences are e.g. vegatarian, vegan etc. and they will populate your diet plan based on your answers.
The Asana Rebel recipes are quite extensive – you can filter by high protein, anti-inflammatory, increase metabolism, boost mental performance, low calorie and many more.
Each recipe will tell you the cooking time, difficulty, the amount of calories each serve contains as well as the cooking instructions. You cannot see the macronutritens of each recipe.
Asana Rebel Workouts
Asana Rebel workouts are primarily focused on yoga, with elements of bodyweight strength training also involved. You won’t need any equipment except for a yoga mat and occasionally a block or towel.
You can filter by the following categories:
- Get in shape
- Flexibility and mobility
- Breathe and relax
- Balance and focus
- Low/Medium/High Intensity
Workouts vary in duration from around 4 to 30 minutes.
Asana Rebel Meditations
I am a big fan of meditations myself, so thoroughly enjoyed the meditation aspect of the Asana Rebel app. They vary in duration from several minutes up to 15 minutes.
I also liked how there were also specific meditation collections, such as deep relaxation, anger management or mindful eating. These meditations build on each other and teach you how it can become part of your daily life.
The meditations are less about spirituality and more about the scientific approach of attention training.
On the today tab you’ll find a daily quiz, which educates you about various elements of health, fitness and nutrition based on science.
I really enjoyed this element of Asana Rebel, as it shows that learning about the process of becoming healthier equally as important as doing the work.
This adds to the holistic approach the Asana Rebel adopts.
What we Like About Asana Rebel
I absolutely loved how Asana Rebel has checklists and reminders. They keep it simple and they focus on what’s most important – slowly integrating healthy habits and lifestyle changes into your day slowly over time.
It’s far more than a fitness app only focused on exercise, it’s a more holistic approach.
They don’t overcomplicate it or focus on the outcome, more about the process of becoming a healthier person over time. This makes it perfect for beginners.
High Quality Workout Videos
We absolutely loved the workout videos – the audio and video quality is impeccable and the instructors are great at giving technique cues throughout.
In particular we liked how you can select your own music as well the ability to speed up or slow down your workout.
Great User Experience
The app is incredibly easy to use, navigate and understand. The checklists are extremely satisfying and the push notification reminders are a great addition.
Furthermore, the app not only works on your phone, but you can also stream it to your apple TV or use it on your apple watch.
Asana Rebel Limitations
Not great for Specific Goals
If you’re someone who wants to achieve specific fitness goals in a time frame, Asana Rebel is limited. For instance, the recipes do not display macronutrients and workouts don’t really build on one another or progress over time.
Trial Version is Very Limited
If you’re not keen on upgrading to the full version of the app, it’s not very extensive.
There are only a handful of free workouts and meditations, so we highly recommend upgrading if you want the most out of the experience.
Some Users Complaining of Glitches & Payment Issues
As I have been researching online, I’ve seen that many users have complained of glitches, being charged incorrectly as well as stating that the workouts take a long time to load.
This isn’t something that I experienced myself, but may be something to keep an eye on. Asana Rebel have a team of developers working on extensive research and innovation, so getting in contact with them if you have any problems is your best bet.
Rushed Yoga Workouts
If you are someone who really likes to get ‘zen’ during your yoga sessions, you may not enjoy Asana Rebel. Most of the workouts move quite quickly through each exercise and you do not hold each pose for very long before moving on.
If you are a yogi who likes to take your time and enjoy the spiritual benefits yoga gives you, Asana Rebel may not be the best app for you. They are a blend between yoga and your typical fitness video workout.
