While there is no personalisation, navigation is snappy, effortlessly guiding you through the interface. Making it great for users of all experience levels.
Today, we will share with your our thoughts on the Epicurious app, giving you the pros and cons so you can make a decision if this is the right app for you.
| What is Epicurious?
Founded by Rochelle Udell on August 18th, 1995, Epicurious was launched as one of the first-ever food databases on the internet.
Back then as one of 23,000 sites on the internet, Epicurious was doing what few other companies were doing and placing themselves on the world wide web.
In 2009, Epicurious launched on the app store, which again became one of the first on the market, as it placed itself as one of the 25,000 on the market.
Fast forward to 2022, Epicurious is considered the grandfather of online food databases.
With this footprint, Epicurious has built its loyal fan base, with a 4.7-star App Store rating.
The app provides its users with the world’s best recipes, and incredible food videos to prepare the most delicious meals.
The Epicurious contains over 35,000 tested recipes, from publishers such as Harper Collins, Gourmet, and Bon Appetit.
Inside, you can view recipes, and videos and save and create shopping lists to streamline the meal planning and preparation process.
| Our Experience With Epicurious
Epicurious is free to download from the App Store (iOS) and Play Store (Android).
There is no sign-up process upon opening Epicurious, as you are transported directly into the app.
While is a nice change from a long-drawn-out questionnaire, it also feels like a missed opportunity to get some basic nutritional and diet preferences that would help personalise the user experience.
Once you have installed the app, you will be taken to the home tab. Here you will be able to view and browse Epicurious’ categories tabs, which include:
- Newest Recipes
- Newest Videos
In this sub-tab, you will be able to view all of the latest recipes, displayed with information including:
Within each, you will be presented with further information to create the dish, which includes:
- Make it again %
- Active Time
- Total Time
- Add to shopping list
- Preparation (instructions)
In this sub-tab you will be able to view highly rated recipes.
The ‘Newest Video’ sub-tab gives you access to Epicurious’ latest videos from their youtube channel.
This home tab is brilliantly laid out with clear headings and categories, which is great for new users.
Access to the youtube videos is a great touch as it gives you a sample of additional resources that are presented by Epicurious.
The ‘Timer’ tab provides you with a cooking timer for a variety of different foods. In this section, you will be presented with categories including:
- Chicken & Pork
Within each, you will be shown more options on the type of vegetable or cut of meat.
Each item contains information for preparation, including:
- Cook Time
- Start Smart Timer
The cook timer is an excellent idea as it gives you the added guidance for cooking specific foods, which is not always that clear.
The timer is a great touch as it not only shows you how long you have left but also instructions for prep.
The ‘Search’ gives you access to Epicurious’ library of recipes. When you open the tab, you will be shown recommended tags from a range of categories, including:
- Meal & Course
- Dish Type
- Dietary Concerns
By selecting a tag you will immediately be presented with all the dishes related to that tag.
This is the perfect way to present a search tab, as it provides users with what to expect from the app database.
It also fills out the search tab, giving a sense of weight to the app and reducing the occurrence of wasted space.
Here you will be able to view your shopping list. These items appear when you ‘Add to Shopping List’ when you browse recipes.
This is a simple and effective function that allows you to check off your list of items. However, the addition of in-app links to online grocery ordering would help to complete the experience.
Recipe Box Tab
This tab allows you to view all your saved recipes. If you have not saved any, you will be taken to the ‘Search’ tab where you will be given the opportunity to browse and save some of your favourites, which will appear in the ‘Recipe Box’ tab.

| What We Liked About Epicurious
Extremely User Friendly
Epicurious provides a fantastic user experience. From the moment you open the app, you will be quickly transported to the ‘Home’ menu, which is well-laid out with clear headings, menu items, and descriptions.
Here you will be able to simply and effortlessly navigate the app, with each tab feeling relevant and perfectly weighted.
With each menu feels intuitive, with simple circle-back pathways that help to simplify overall navigation.
The overall experience makes using Epicurious highly enjoyable to use.
Youtube videos are one of Epicurious’ greatest features. Upon opening the app, you will be given access to the YouTube content with a ‘Home’ sub-tab.
This is such a great function as it allows you to view and feel the personality of the brand.
Videos are essential to the function of meal prep and cookbook apps as they can convey much more information than isn’t always passed through in the text.
The addition of YouTube channel content is also a great choice.
It shows users that there is an additional resource from the brand, which they can view outside the platform should be interested in further viewing.
| Epicurious Negatives
No Personalised Questionnaire
Epicurious does not offer a personalisation questionnaire through any part of the app. Typically when signing up to an app, these questionnaires are given to customise the user experience.
And while they are not always present in cookbook-style apps, they can go a long way to improving the overall user experience.
By implementing just a handful of allergies, and diet questions, the platform would be some major steps toward showing their users they are interested in their personal experience.
No Online Shopping Function
Epicurious does not provide an in-app online grocery shopping function.
In-app online shopping functions are something that are still currently being run out with many applications on the market.
And while they are not a staple function within cookbooks and meal preparation apps, they can be a game-changer for many who want to streamline meal time even further.
While this is not a major issue as the app does every other aspect almost perfectly.
This lack of function may leave some users wanting more, losing to apps that offer this function.
