Today we review FS8, the new fitness concept wowing the industry.
The South Yarra FS8 facility was an absolute treat to work out in – with slick hardwood floors, neon-lit logo and a solid yet relaxing workout to match.
If you’re looking for a mindful movement experience that incorporates a little more structure into the typical yoga flow, we highly recommend checking out FS8.
This was our experience.
FS8 has taken the health & fitness industry by storm, expanding quickly into several locations in parts of Sydney and more recently, Melbourne.
Designed by F45 Training, it’s a revolutionary new fitness brand that combines the very best elements of yoga, pilates and basic strength training for a full-body, group fitness experience.
What Does FS8 Stand for?
F stands for ‘functional’, which refers to the prescribed exercises being somewhat specific to helping you perform everyday tasks and movements.
S is for ‘style’, encapsulating the boutique environment and innovative style of training that is FS8.
8 represents the number of training modalities (e.g. yoga, pilates, etc.) that the brand blends to create their workouts.
What’s the experience like?
Take the structured, circuit based style of training offered by F45 and combine it with the flowing, instructor lead pilates/yoga classes and you have yourself an FS8 class.
Similar to F45, an FS8 class is beginner friendly and easy to follow along with. Each exercise is explained before you commence the workout, and you are always able to view the TV screens placed around the facility to refer to if you ever get lost.
Most often, an FS8 workout will have you completing an exercise for a set period of time, followed by a shorter period of rest. You work through an array of movements in a circuit-like fashion for 45-60 minutes.
You’ll be using an array of equipment including dumbbells, rings, reformers, mini bands, foam rollers, as well as ones’ own body weight all incorporated into the different weekly workouts.
How much does an FS8 membership cost?
An FS8 membership typically costs $69.95 per week, however, foundational memberships are available at many of their newer locations and can be as little as $54.95 per week.
Contracts are flexible, with weekly, fortnightly or monthly direct debits available. You also have the ability to save on your weekly membership rate if you sign up for longer periods of time.
Furthermore, there is no sign up fee at FS8, relieving you of the pricey barrier to entry many fitness centres inflict on new members.
For a boutique fitness membership, FS8 is well worth your money if you attend regularly. There are multiple classes on every day of the week, starting at 6:00am in the morning running through to the early evening.
What are the class sizes like?
Class sizes accomodate up to around 25 people, with two instructors per class. The classes we participated in were not at capacity, so we had plenty of time to be coached and have our form corrected by the instructors.
It will be interesting to see how FS8 fares with larger numbers as their member bases grow, as many pilates and yoga enthusiasts really appreciate the form correction and individual care that comes with an intimate studio.
What are the people like?
At the South Yarra location, we were highly impressed by co-managers Ash and Caitlyn, who were genuine and caring, yet also gave members an injection of motivation when they needed to be pushed as well as concrete technique correction for those still learning the exercises.
In our experience, there were plenty of men and women of different ages, experience levels, shapes and sizes. FS8 is a great equaliser, with members coming from various backgrounds including the high energy functional training gyms, holistic pilates endeavours and zen-esk yoga studios.
People are polite and warm – there aren’t any egos or show offs and everyone feels equally welcome and involved.
What’s the facility like?
The FS8 facility is boutique and clean – it almost feels like you’ve suddenly found yourself in a relaxing retreat or accomodation for an hour.
As you enter, you’ll be greeted with smooth greystone flooring, a tidy locker area and multiple stairwells that lead up to the grand upstairs training stage.
The workout area features clean hardwood floors, slick neon lighting, brand new shining equipment and a view overlooking chapel street. The bathrooms and change areas a beautiful and clean, I’d honestly rather shower there than my own home.
What does a typical FS8 workout/week look like?
Each day of the week features a slightly different workout, with some pretty funky names to go with them. These can vary between FS8 locations.
Workouts are designed using a database of over 2800 carefully chosen exercises.
