If you have had anything to do with fitness, been to a gym, or turned on a TV in the last 20 years, there is a good chance you know who Jillian Michaels is. Starting her career, Jillian Michaels shot to stardom after she became one of the original trainers on The Biggest Loser USA in 2004. After 11 seasons, Michaels said goodbye to the biggest loser, before releasing the Jillian Michaels Fitness App in 2017, which now sports over 10,000 monthly downloads and 4800 reviews for a 4.7 stars on the app store. It is safe to say that the Jillian Michaels Fitness app has been a booming success.
Our Experience With Jillian Michaels
I have to say, I had a little bit of added motivation for reviewing the Jillian Michaels Fitness app today. With a year and a half of sporadic lockdowns across Australia, I can honestly say I needed some motivation and accountability to stay on track and not become a complete couch potato. So, I figured where else is there to turn besides the prolific Biggest Loser personality, Jillian Michaels, for inspiration.
The experience starts with a motivational speech from the woman of the hour herself, before you answer a few basic questions about your lifestyle to help the platform cater to your needs.

- Your Goals (Weight Loss, Shape & Tone, Cardio, Pregnancy Fitness and Mindfulness)
- Your Training Preferences
Immediately from these few questions, the apps interface and the production quality, you can tell that the Jillian Michaels Fitness app is made by a personal trainer with years of experience and who cares about what she is providing her faithful users.
Once you are signed up you will find yourself on the workouts tab. The workout tab gives you access to the complete library of workouts that the Jillian Michaels platform has to offer, including:
- New Workouts
- 7 Minute Circuits
- First Timer Workouts
- Weights And Functional Training
- Workout DVD Library
The real stand out for the workouts tab was the ‘Generate’ function. It is little more than a search bar to help you refine your searches and refine the right workout for you. The graphics and design however, make using it much more enticing and engaging.
I tried a few of the basic workouts, starting with ‘7-minute upper body’. Once you select a workout, the platform allows you to select the equipment you have access too. Secondly, the exercises are clearly laid out, and the video and sound quality is outstanding, with short consistent instructions keeping the energy high.
The only thing that I would like to see added to the workout is a short explanation about the purpose and benefits of the workout, to give the users more insight into why they are exercising, boosting motivation, accountability and a sense of control rather than just showing them how and what to do.
The ‘Meals’ tab is set to ‘AMP up your nutrition’. The meals tab will lead you through a basic questionnaire, asking you about your:
- Food Restrictions
- Batch Cooking
- Number Of Servings
Before spitting out a food plan to fit your lifestyle.
I personally really enjoyed the ‘Batch Cooking’ section of the questionnaire. As some of the key barriers to healthy eating are time and convenience, so to have a fitness platform consider that and how to make healthy eating as simple and repeatable as possible, shows a lot of insight into what people struggling to eat better go through.
The meal plan and recipes look quite simple and easy to replicate – especially with the help of the schedule and groceries functions. It even offers healthy dessert options, which for me, would definitely help to prevent me from falling off the wagon completely.
Next up, the ‘Me’ tab.
The ‘Me’ tab is a hub of information about you and your fitness journey – your food, your weight, your workouts and your progress and allows you to gain rewards and add progress pictures.
Although tracking your journey in detail may seem daunting, it is an invaluable tool.
Just like any race, there needs to be a start and a finish and a lot of work in between. You need to have clear picture of whether the actions you are taking each day are moving you closer to your goal, or pushing you further away – that is why I absolutely love the ‘Me’ tab.
Lastly, the ‘Community’ tab. The ‘Community’ tab is your educational hub. It gives you unfettered access to the complete library of resources that the Jillian Michaels platform has to offer; blogs, podcasts, frequently asked questions and even access to forums of other users with the same struggles and triumphs as you.
This is one of my favourite sections of the Jillian Michaels platform. As I previously mentioned, educating people ‘why’ their health and fitness is important, and how it can effect them is probably the biggest challenge of all. Making someone sweat is the easy part. Teaching them why it’s important and encouraging them to be self sufficient, that’s the hard part.

The Jillian Michaels platform is user friendly, packed with valuable information and somehow manages to have a warm, unintimidating feel.
High Production Quality
The incredible sound and video quality combined with the in depth questionnaires and user friendly tools make it clear that a lot of time and money has been put into understanding the users journey while using the app to make it as easy as possible.
The community section was diverse and easy to use, giving users the ability to access information no matter how they learn; whether they trust the encouraging words of a friend in a forum, like to knuckle down into the nuts and bolts in a blog or hear what the experts have to say. The Jillian Michaels app does it all.
Jillian Michaels Limitations
Minimal Explanation For Each Workout
The workouts were set out in a clear and precise manner, however I think the platform could really benefit from implementing a short blurb before each workout outlining the purpose of the workout and why it is important. This will help users gain a greater knowledge around health and fitness and allow them to think more critically about the workouts they chose, and help them to get the most out of the app.
