Les Mills was founded in 1968 when a New Zealand four time Olympian of the same name opened his first gym in Auckland. It was a simple gym, cardio and weights set up for athletes in the local community.
Les Mills did not see the explosion into the world leader we see today until Les son Phillip returned from College in the US, witnessing the aerobics phenomenon sweep the fitness world.
Phillip spent the next several years with his wife Jackie discovering what makes a good fitness class, combining popular music with training, before releasing Body Pump in 1990. And the rest is history.

The home page offers you recommendations of workouts, trainers, and classes types to try.

Les Mills will ask you:

Before giving you a summary of your preferences and refining it’s recommendations.
The explore tab allows you to wade through the Les Mills database to test, trial and find the perfect workouts for you. The explore page presents you with the class types, before opening up into a sub menu of workouts.
The vibrant colours and the iconic class names this tab engaging and easy to use.
However the search bar itself is a bit clunky, making refining your searches and tiny bit more tedious, but the sheer amount of classes and value that the Les Mills platform provides is outstanding.
The plans tab allows you to search through Les Mills 10 complete workout and nutrition programs that last for between 5 – 13 weeks.
- Optimal Mix
- Les Mills Fuel Reset
- Fast Burner
- Fast Burner Advanced
- Game Changer
Each program is accompanied by a brief description of ‘what to expect’, along with fitness level, duration and equipment required.
Although Les Mills only offer a few programs and minimal nutritional programs or advice, I did enjoy the ‘goal setting and fitness testing’ module of each program.
Setting clear, tangible and measurable goals is incredibly difficult and plays an enormous part in regulating your motivation and accountability. If you can see where your target is, and you think you can hit it, you are much more likely to strive to get there.
This is why I love this module because it helps people test, measure and set clear and reasonable goals for themselves before they start.

What We Like About Les Mills On Demand
Extensive Range Of Classes
The Les Mills app offers a wide range of the classic workouts and classes that you will find at a Les Mills physical location.
Awesome Goal Setting And Testing
I really appreciate the addition of testing and goal setting. This is a step that so many fitness applications overlook but it is pivotal in developing clear targets, motivation and adherence.
Great For Beginners
The Les Mills app is a great place for beginners to start. Providing new gym goers with a fun and energetic fitness experience to help them take those important first steps without the stress of going to a gym.
Les Mills On Demand Limitations
Les Mills app only offers a small amount of nutritional advice compared to some of the other big players in the space.
Small Array Of Complete Programs
Les Mills only offer 10 complete workout and nutrition programs. Although this is by no means bad, it is still quite modest compared to some of their competitors.
Sign Up Process Is Awkward
In order to sign up to the Les Mills app you will need to access their site directly before downloading the app.
This was disjointed and confusing when I first downloaded that app and could be enough for some people to rethink their decision to sign up.
Clunky Search Function
The search function is adequate but could use some improvement.
Not Great For Intermediate Or Advanced Gym Goers
Les Mills is centered around mostly body weight sessions. With minimal equipment being used each session. This makes it difficult to increase the intensity of the total load of a session. Intermediate or advanced gym goers will require more complexity and higher loads to continue progressing.
Les Mills On Demand: The Bottom Line
Les Mills has been offering people a fun and energetic fitness experience for years, cementing it’s spot as a pillar in the fitness community world wide.
Is the Les Mills app any good?
Yes, the Les Mills app is a great! The Les Mills app offers all the great features of the Les Mills brand in one easy access place. The Les Mills app, much like Les Mills classes in a gym setting are great for beginners who are looking for a fun, friendly, energetic and unintimidating place to start their fitness journey while still big steps in their health and fitness. The Les Mills app is also a great substitute for all those Les Mills fanatics out there who love the atmosphere but can not quite find time to get to a class in person. However the Les Mills app is limited. The body weight/light weight workouts may be great for beginners, however, more intermediate and advanced gym goers will require more complex and more intense workouts to continue progressing.
