Energy balance refers to the balance of calories you consume (eat) versus the calories your body uses.
If your goal is a weight loss, being in a calorie deficit (eat fewer calories than you use), will result in weight loss.
Yes, it’s that simple.
It’s important to keep in mind that MyFitnessPal isn’t actually a diet in itself, rather, it can help you to understand the energy contained within the food you are eating.
In my opinion, MyFitnessPal is more effective when used in conjunction with some sort of diet approach or plan, however, it can still give you valuable insight if you simply just start recording your already existing eating habits.
| My Experience with MyFitnessPal
I have been an avid user of MyFitnessPal for as long as I can remember.
It has always been a staple part of my daily phone usage and helped me and my clients gain and lose hundreds of kilograms over the years.
Whether I am using it to try and get myself back in the zone mentally or I am training hard leading up to a competition, MyFitnessPal has been a part of my routine for many years.
Most recently I used MyFitnessPal during my weight-loss journey from January to May 2021.
At the end of 2020 I found myself 125.1kg – overweight, unmotivated and needing a shift. So I decided to set myself a goal to lose 20kg.
I understood that in its simplest form, weight loss is simple equation of calories consumed vs calories burnt. Or how much I was eating vs how much I was exercising. So I signed up to my local F45 and re-logged in to MyFitnessPal and committed to tracking my food every day.
MyFitnessPal is incredibly easy to use. The simple ‘add’ and barcode scanning functions made inputting new food effortless and apps ability to recall your recent meals made tracking the my food everyday an absolute breeze.
You can use MyFitnessPal to estimate how much chicken breast was in the wrap you had at lunch or count every gram of chocolate you snuck after dinner. It helps you keep keen a measured eye on your diet, water consumption and exercise levels, allowing you to make well informed, critical decisions about your health and wellbeing.
I can honestly say that adding MyFitnessPal to my arsenal of tools was an important factor in my weight loss journey and helped me lose a total of 26kg.
I found that although MyFitnessPal may not be able to give you one hundred percent accurate measures of calories or macro nutrients for every single meal that I ate, it certainly gives you a solid guide of how much you’re actually eating.
Not only did MyFitnessPal act as a food tracker, but the accurate breakdown of macronutrients in your food provided me with a valuable education on what exactly is in the food I was eating allowing me to make more informed, critical decisions about my diet, health and fitness.

When you first download MyFitnessPal you will be guided through a series of basic questions to help you get started.

Home Page
MyFitnessPal opens on the home page, showing you a news feed for everything going on in the MyFitnessPal community.
Plastering at the top of the page is your daily calorie goal to help keep you on track. You’ll also find helpful blogs and updates from your friends and other social connections who are also using the app.
Diary Tab
The Diary Tab is found at the bottom of the homepage.
This tab takes you to a simple food diary page, breaking your day into breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and exercise, with your calorie goal painted still visible across the top.
Simply click ‘add food’ and you will be met with a search bar where you can find a database of 11 million foods.
Alternatively, you can simply use the scanning function to scan the barcode on your food packaging and within seconds it will deliver you with an in depth nutrient breakdown of your meal and serving sizes before allowing your to add it to your daily total.
An additional bonus to the diary tab is that once you have entered a meal/food once, it goes to your recent history, allowing you to quickly add it to your diary on following days rather than searching it again.
Progress Tab
The progress tab is simply used to keep a consistent record of how your body changes over time. By simply pressing the ‘+’ button in the top right corner you will be met by a page where you can input your current weight, the date and a progress photo.
Once completed it is then logged at the bottom of the progress page.
This is an excellent function as it allows you to monitor the peaks and troughs in your progress over weeks, months and years rather than just a few days.
This allows you to more accurately manage your health, weight and fitness and monitor whether the changes you are making to your diet and routine are having a positive or negative impact on your journey towards your goals.
More Tab
The More Tab will help you find everything else you are looking for.
Recipes, workouts, helpful blogs, the ability to pair different devices to help track your activity levels and even count your steps and even a friends tab where you can search and add your friends and family and watch each others progress as an extra level of accountability.
However, the function in the “More Tab’ that we found most compelling was the “Nutrition’ section.
The Nutrition section breaks down your daily food intake into calories (energy total), macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and fats).
This is important as it allows you to not only see the total amount of food/calories you are but a more accurate breakdown of your diet.
Losing weight is a simple equation of consuming less calories than you are burning.
However, in order to grow lean muscle or lose fat specifically you will need to monitor the amount of protein – the building blocks of muscle tissue – that you are consuming in order to grow and repair muscle tissue.
As well as managing the amount of carbohydrates, fats and sugars you are consuming to prevent yourself from consuming excessive amounts and possibly storing it on your body.

MyFitnessPal is free to download, sign up and use for basic functionality, such as nutrition tracking.
However, if you want to use their premium features, such as meal scanning, you’ll need to upgrade to a premium subscription.
MyFitnessPal also gives you the ability to try their premium subscription for 30 days free of charge, however, make sure you cancel within this time period if you don’t want to get charged.

By looking at this table, it seems as though the functionality of a free membership is very limited.
However, after years of experience using the app, I personally find this not to be the case.
During my 26 kg weight loss journey, I only ever used the free version of MyFitnessPal.
However, here are two premium features we really liked that may make it worth the upgrade:

- Customisable macronutrients
MyFitnessPal Meal Scan
The MyFitnessPal meal scan feature allows you to hover your camera over a type of food and MyFitnessPal will quickly identify what it is. This feature is not to be confused with the barcode scanner.
This is a great addition if you want to scan individual foods, such as a glass of water or an apple, however, if you have a meal that has multiple food groups mixed up, the meal scanner isn’t very effective.
Customisable Macronutrients
Perhaps the other feature of Premium that’s worth upgrading for is having the ability to customise how many grams of each macronutrient you’re trying to hit for the day.
In the free version, you can only allocate a percentage of your total calories for the day, rather than a gram by gram breakdown, which may be limiting for some advanced users.
| Is MyFitnessPal Accurate?
There has been some skepticism around the accuracy of MyFitnessPal’s database, due to the fact that anyone using the app can upload recipes and meals to the database.
Apps such as Cronometer combat this by only allowing trusted sources of information to add to their nutrition database, which may be a better alternative if this is an important factor for you.
In saying this, MyFitnessPal is extremely accurate for base ingredients, such as brown rice, fruits and vegetables, however, it is not very accurate if you choose custom meals e.g. homemade chicken curry or Pub Parma that have been created by other MyFitnessPal users.
We recommend creating your own custom meals by adding up all of the individual ingredients so that you get the most accurate representation of what you’re actually eating.
| Is MyFitnessPal Effective?
At the end of the day, the reason why we use fitness apps is because we want to see results.
So, is using MyFitness to track your macronutrients and calories going to help you get results?
MyFitnessPal is an extremely effective way to lose weight, so long as you accurately input your information to begin with and input the correct foods, quantities and weights. It’s also going to effectively educate you around the energy found within the foods you eat.

Workouts/Food Plans Seem Like An Afterthought
Although it is amazing how MyFitnessPal is able to integrate so many different helpful tools into one easy to use platform, they could do more to promote healthy food and exercise options rather then hiding them on the ‘More’ tab.
No Basic Tutorials
Although MyFitnessPal is fairly intuitive for most people, when I have consulted with some of my older and less tech savvy clients they have still struggled to set up and figure out how to use the app.
A basic set of tutorials breaking down the app functions, the importance of keeping a diary and basic information around the function and importance of macronutrients would go a long way to maximize the impact and adherence to using MyFitnessPal consistently.
Time Consuming
Tracking your calories with MyFitnessPal can certainly be time consuming and monotonous, which can have many people giving up within a few weeks.

Losing stubborn belly fat is a great way to boost your self confidence, self image, and improve your health. Reducing your waist size can also decrease your risk of chronic health conditions like diabetes and even cancer.
But how do you get a smaller waist?
There is no magic pill, the only way to get a smaller waist is through hard work and dedication. You have to reduce your body fat percentage using a combination of proper nutrition, weights, cardio and healthy lifestyle while continuing to develop and build your underlying core muscles.
Today I am going to walk you through my 6 tips and tricks that I have used as a trainer and in my personal life to get rid of stubborn belly fat.

Where You Carry Fat Is Important
One of the unfortunate truths of life is that no matter how hard we try, you are going to carry a little bit of excess belly fat.
Depending on your body type, genetics and a range of other factors you might carry your excess fat in your arms, legs, butt, thighs and abdomen.
This is where it gets a little serious.
Carrying extra weight around your waist has been linked to a range of health conditions like heart disease, cancer, diabetes.
Why?
Storing large amounts of fat around your internal organs can impact their ability to function.
An analogy I always use with clients is,
‘Having a lot of excess fat around your organs is like trying to run in a pool of water. You can do it, but it is going to take a lot of effort.’
Excess fat creates added stress and strain on your organs making it more difficult for them to function effectively.
How To Get A Smaller Waist?
Now all you have to reduce your waistline is take this one pill….
Just kidding!
Unfortunately, when it comes to reducing your waist size there is no short cuts, pills or quick fixes.
If you want those washboard abs or that bikini body you have always dreamed of, you have to reduce your body fat percentage by increasing your muscle and decreasing your fat mass through a combination of diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.
Essentially, you have to burn the excess fat around your stomach (and the rest of your body), while building up the muscle underneath.
This will leave you with a slimmer, trimmer and more toned waistline.
Eat Better
A well balanced diet is the cornerstone of health, fat loss and a slimmer waistline.
Like any machine, you can’t expect it to run smoothly if you are not putting the right fuel in the engine, right?
When people think about the word ‘diet’ they think salad, chicken breast and months of flavorless food.
But where the real issue lies is poor nutritional education.
For example, these are real things I have heard clients say over the years.
‘I am only eating 1000 calories per day, how come I am not losing weight?’
‘What do you mean there are 60g of carbs in an ice coffee and a banana’?
‘I had one egg for breakfast, is that enough protein?’
Despite what people think, diets and proper nutrition is not about starving yourself.
It is about understanding what is in your food and how it interacts with your body.
Here are 6 techniques that helped me and my clients navigate healthy eating.
- Focus on adding good habits – Trying to go cold turkey and cut out everything bad from you life is almost impossible and a great way to set yourself up for failure. Instead start by focusing on a few good things that you want to add to your routine (water, fruit, vegetables). This will cut out a lot of the anxiety and help you build momentum.
- Calorie deficit – There is no magic pill, losing weight and fat is simple math. You have to consume less calories then you burn.
- You do not have to starve – Not only is starving yourself unhealthy and unsustainable, it is absolutely no fun. Just like trying to bench press 200kg on your first day in the gym is a bad idea. So is dramatically cutting your calories. Start with a small calorie deficit.
- Track your food – Thanks to apps like MyFitnessPal, tracking your food, calories and macronutrients is easy. Keeping a general food log each day is a great way to learn more about the food you are consuming. Helping you identify the good, the bad and the ugly. Plus planning your meals in advance is an awesome motivator.
- Drink more water – Drinking enough water is obviously fantastic for your mental and physical health. I have always found it to be an awesome daily goal that literally anyone can do to boost your confidence, mood and health.
- Protein is key – So many people forget to eat an adequate amount of protein. Not only is it a great way to stay full for longer and reduce your need to snack, but it is essential for building lean muscle which is a key component of reducing your body fat percentage.
Move More
‘If I do a bunch of core exercises, I will lose fat around my tummy… right?’
Wrong.
This is what is known as spot reduction.
While core exercise can grow and tone the muscle underneath the fat, it is unlikely you will see any significant results from this alone.
Exercise ranges from high resistance/low cardiovascular strain (1RM squat, bench press, Olympic lifting) which is predominantly used to to build muscle, strength and power.
To low resistance/high cardiovascular strain (walking, running, swimming) which is generally used to develop your fitness and fat among other things.
When you are trying to trim your waistline it is important to do full body cardio and weights workouts to develop your muscle, strength, coordination, and increase your muscle activity across your entire body.
And in order to effectively reduce your body fat percentage and give you a slimmer waistline, you need to melt down that lay of fat on your stomach and build up the muscles underneath while strengthening your entire body.
But how do I get started?
Simply add 1 more day of exercise into your weekly routine. So if you are exercise one day per week then make it two.
Slowly building the frequency and intensity of your physical activity.
My personal goal is to exercise for 30 minutes every day. Alternating between your favourite cardiovascular exercise and a full body weights program.
‘But isn’t that too much exercise?’
30 minutes of exercise per day equals roughly 2% of your entire week. You just need to make sure you build up slowly and recover properly.

Basic Weights Program
If you are looking to get in shape and start lifting some weights, completing a full body workout multiple times per week is the way to go!
Why?
Beginner lifters benefit from short, frequent bursts of resistance exercise, as it subjects you to small doses several times per week, building muscle across your entire body, not to overload your muscle groups with split workouts, maintaining high muscle activity and boosts your confidence and ability to learn the new movements.
This is an example of a basic full body workout.

It is important to use a range of relevant testing metrics to monitor your progress, think critically about your journey and stay motivated.

In late 2020, the events of several lockdowns and a suspended gym membership, meant I was about 7 kilos heavier than I wanted to be.

When you download Tammy Fit for the first time you will have to select your preferred plan before being asked a few basic questions (age, sex etc.).
This is followed by a few basic questions about your lifestyle and preferences so that Tammy Fit can prescribe you with a specific kilojoule goal and macronutrient breakdown (carbohydrates, proteins and fats).
Diary Tab
The diary tab will act as your head quarters while using Tammy Fit. On the diary tab you will be able to:

The soft colour palette and easy to use interface make for a welcoming introduction to the Tammy Fit community.

I found this to be a little bit awkward, as new users are already paying for a subscription, but then are immediately upsold.

In order to sign up to the 6 Week Booty Challenge you will be asked to pay an additional $129.99. This is personally not a method that I would endorse.

I have to say, I had a little bit of added motivation for reviewing the Jillian Michaels Fitness app today.
With a year and a half of sporadic lockdowns across Australia, I can honestly say I needed some motivation and accountability to stay on track and not become a complete couch potato.
So, I figured where else is there to turn besides the prolific Biggest Loser personality, Jillian Michaels, for inspiration.
The experience starts with a motivational speech from the woman of the hour herself, before you answer a few basic questions about your lifestyle to help the platform cater to your needs.
Including:
- Fitness Level
- Your Goals (Weight Loss, Shape & Tone, Cardio, Pregnancy Fitness and Mindfulness)
- Your Training Preferences
Immediately from these few questions, the apps interface and the production quality, you can tell that the Jillian Michaels Fitness app is made by a personal trainer with years of experience and who cares about what she is providing her faithful users.
Workouts Tab
Once you are signed up you will find yourself on the workouts tab. The workout tab gives you access to the complete library of workouts that the Jillian Michaels platform has to offer, including:

The real stand out for the workouts tab was the ‘Generate’ function. It is little more than a search bar to help you refine your searches and refine the right workout for you. The graphics and design however, make using it much more enticing and engaging.
I tried a few of the basic workouts, starting with ‘7-minute upper body’. Once you select a workout, the platform allows you to select the equipment you have access too. Secondly, the exercises are clearly laid out, and the video and sound quality is outstanding, with short consistent instructions keeping the energy high.
The only thing that I would like to see added to the workout is a short explanation about the purpose and benefits of the workout, to give the users more insight into why they are exercising, boosting motivation, accountability and a sense of control rather than just showing them how and what to do.
Meals Tab
The ‘Meals’ tab is set to ‘AMP up your nutrition’. The meals tab will lead you through a basic questionnaire, asking you about your:

- Schedule
- Food Restrictions
- Batch Cooking
- Number Of Servings
Before spitting out a food plan to fit your lifestyle.
I personally really enjoyed the ‘Batch Cooking’ section of the questionnaire. As some of the key barriers to healthy eating are time and convenience, so to have a fitness platform consider that and how to make healthy eating as simple and repeatable as possible, shows a lot of insight into what people struggling to eat better go through.
The meal plan and recipes look quite simple and easy to replicate – especially with the help of the schedule and groceries functions. It even offers healthy dessert options, which for me, would definitely help to prevent me from falling off the wagon completely.
Me Tab
Next up, the ‘Me’ tab.
The ‘Me’ tab is a hub of information about you and your fitness journey – your food, your weight, your workouts and your progress and allows you to gain rewards and add progress pictures.
Although tracking your journey in detail may seem daunting, it is an invaluable tool.
Just like any race, there needs to be a start and a finish and a lot of work in between. You need to have clear picture of whether the actions you are taking each day are moving you closer to your goal, or pushing you further away – that is why I absolutely love the ‘Me’ tab.
Community Tab
Lastly, the ‘Community’ tab. The ‘Community’ tab is your educational hub. It gives you unfettered access to the complete library of resources that the Jillian Michaels platform has to offer; blogs, podcasts, frequently asked questions and even access to forums of other users with the same struggles and triumphs as you.
This is one of my favourite sections of the Jillian Michaels platform. As I previously mentioned, educating people ‘why’ their health and fitness is important, and how it can effect them is probably the biggest challenge of all. Making someone sweat is the easy part. Teaching them why it’s important and encouraging them to be self sufficient, that’s the hard part.

This will help users gain a greater knowledge around health and fitness and allow them to think more critically about the workouts they chose, and help them to get the most out of the app.
